The Lightning Thief is a 2005 fantasy/adventure novel based on Greek myth, the first young adult novel written by author Rick Riordan. It is the first book in the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series, which ventures the adventures and exciting activity of modern twelve-year-old Percy Jackson as he discovers he is a demigod, the son of a mortal woman and the Greek god Poseidon.

The plot of the film starts with Percy Jackson, a twelve year old boy diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, who has been expelled from many schools. On a way with his mother, his friend Grover, revealed to be a satyr, urgently tells Percy's mother that Percy must go to a certain camp. As they drive towards camp, they are attacked by a Minotaur which grabs Percy's mother. She dissolves into a golden shower of light, while Grover and Percy narrowly escape. 1. Perseus "Percy" Jackson: The protagonist and narrator of the series and a son of Poseidon. Being a child of the "Big Three" (Zeus, Hades, Poseidon), Percy is possibly the child referred to within the prophecy; the said prophecy foretells that the next half-blood child of the "Big Three" to reach the age of sixteen would make a decision that would either save or destroy the universe.

2. Annabeth Chase: The daughter of Athena (the goddess of wisdom). She is shown to be somewhat pompous upon her first appearance, but quickly warms to Percy on their first death mission together.

3. Grover Underwood: He is a satyr and Percy Jackson's best friend. He has found the four most powerful demigods of the century: Percy Jackson (son of Poseidon), Thalia (daughter of Zeus), and Nico and Bianca di Angelo (children of Hades)
